The Kingdom, represented by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, concluded its participation in the 28th session of the Committee on Forests (COFO28), organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the Italian capital, Rome, from September 28 to October 2, 2026, coinciding with the 10th Global Forest Week, under the theme “Forests for Food, Resilience, and Prosperity.”
The Kingdom’s participation witnessed an active presence in the session’s discussions, highlighting its leadership role as the chair of the Committee on Forests and Rangelands in the Near East. It showcased its experience in sustainable forest management and ecosystem restoration, its efforts in combating desertification, and enhancing the resilience of ecosystems, along with its contributions to the international dialogue on the challenges facing forests in dry and arid environments.
The Deputy Executive Director for Vegetation Cover Development and Management, Chair of the Committee on Forests and Rangelands in the Near East, Dr. Saud Al-Ruwaili, presented several priorities for the region’s countries, including the Kingdom, which emphasize the importance of integrating forests, rangelands, and agriculture to enhance food security and climate resilience, integrated landscape approaches to support restoration and sustainable development, as well as strengthening fire prevention and early warning systems, supporting regional cooperation, accelerating the implementation of green cities, and linking them to landscape restoration and the Green Middle East Initiative.
Dr. Najeeb Al-Suhbi, Director of the Valleys Department at the center, explained during his participation in a session titled “The State of the World’s Forests in 2026: Restoring Forests and Landscapes… A Way Forward for a Sustainable Future,” that forests and trees represent a strategic investment in people, land, and the future due to their role in protecting biodiversity, enhancing food and water security, and supporting livelihoods.
He highlighted the targets of Saudi Vision 2030, and the initiatives “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East” in expanding afforestation projects and rehabilitating degraded lands, which recently led to the Kingdom receiving an international award for its pioneering restoration initiatives and being honored during COP17 in Mongolia.
Dr. Al-Suhbi emphasized, in the session “Dialogue with Constitutional Bodies in Forestry,” the importance of enhancing the status of “Forest Health” within the work program of the working group concerned with forests in drylands and agricultural, forestry, and pastoral systems, stressing that it is a fundamental pillar for sustainable forest management and restoration, and for increasing their resilience to drought challenges and land degradation.
For her part, Dr. Amal Al-Daij, Director of International Cooperation at the center, presented during her participation in a session on “Enhancing Actions to Address Wildfires through the Global Fire Management Center and FAO’s Work in Integrated Fire Management,” the Kingdom’s efforts in transitioning to integrated fire management, which is based on a system that includes prevention, early warning, effective response, and recovery through a supportive natural regeneration approach, employing artificial intelligence and modern technologies in monitoring and surveillance.
Dr. Al-Daij noted, during the discussion on “The Multi-Year Work Program of the Committee on Forests,” the Kingdom’s welcome of the program’s work plan, and the emphasis on the importance of enhancing the role of regional forest committees in conveying regional priorities and incorporating them into the work of the Committee on Forests, which contributes to aligning regional and global levels, while continuing to focus on forests in dry environments and pastoral forestry systems within the committee’s work, and building on the outputs of the working group concerned with forests in drylands.
The center’s delegation participated in several bilateral meetings with countries and international organizations to enhance cooperation and exchange experiences in restoring dry lands and ecosystems, managing forests and rangelands, water harvesting, employing modern technologies in wildfire management, and reducing the spread of invasive plant species, in addition to promoting eco-tourism and building and developing capacities.
This participation comes as part of the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing its presence in international forums concerned with forests, exchanging experiences and practices in sustainable management and ecosystem restoration, supporting international efforts to address the challenges of land degradation and climate change, coinciding with its presidency of the 26th session of the Forests and Rangelands Authority for the Near East from September 2025 to August 2027, which enhances its role in conveying the priorities and needs of the region’s countries to international dialogue platforms.
