A 102-year-old woman lost her life, while emergency teams rescued about 90 people, following flash floods that swept through the town of Madrigueras in the Albacete province of Spain, after heavy rains inundated large areas of the town and trapped residents inside their homes.

142 liters of rain

Madrigueras recorded about 142 liters of rain per square meter in a short period, prompting authorities to activate an emergency plan and deploy rescue, security, and firefighting teams to the affected areas.

According to local authorities, the water level inside the home where the deceased woman was located rose to more than one meter, while in some homes, the water reached even higher levels, amid consecutive reports from residents who were trapped by the floods.

90 rescue operations

Emergency teams carried out about 90 rescue operations during the evening and night, most of which focused on people trapped inside their homes, while the Civil Guard, firefighters, and the Red Cross participated in the rescue and response operations.

Water sweeping vehicles

The floods caused dozens of vehicles to be swept away and piled up in the streets, in addition to damage to several homes and shops, while large amounts of mud and debris covered the roads and low-lying areas.

The mayor of Madrigueras stated that the floods are among the largest the town has witnessed since the 1950s, as emergency teams continued their work to remove water and clear roads.

Start of cleanup operations

Authorities and residents began extensive cleanup operations to remove mud, debris, and damaged vehicles, while several roads were reopened after the water receded, and parts of others remained closed due to the damage caused by the floods.
