In Riyadh, purebred Arabian horses with their names, lineage, and unique features participate in the 15th edition of the National Championship for the Beauty of Purebred Arabian Horses, gathering 276 heads at Al-Khalidiya Farm, under the supervision of the King Abdulaziz Center for Purebred Arabian Horses.
The participating horses compete in 20 heats, leading to six final championships, with a total prize value of 700,000 riyals, distributed among the top seven places in each heat.
On the first day, competitions were held for foals and young horses; in the yearling fillies heat “A,” the filly “Al-Awja Ajmal” from Ajmal Stud took first place, while “DA Shihah” owned by Azam Al-Qasim came in second, and “Falwa Al-Qamra” secured third place. The championship continues with competitions among the categories of colts, fillies, mares, and stallions, leading to the crowning of the winners in the final championships.
The championship comes amid the growing interest in horse breeding in the Kingdom; the latest comprehensive national data, based on the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s database as of March 2025, shows approximately 60,000 live horses in Saudi Arabia, including 26,220 horses designated for breeding, 14,280 horses for sports and racing, and 19,500 horses for work and recreation.
The Medina region leads the Kingdom with 16,287 horses, followed by the Riyadh region with 13,188 horses; this means that the two regions together comprise nearly half of the Kingdom’s horses. Horses are identified by electronic chips, and most stables and horse holdings are now registered and geographically defined through specialized national platforms.
Regarding purebred Arabian horses, a report presented by the Kingdom to the International Arabian Horse Organization for 2025 revealed that the cumulative number of horses registered in the pedigree records reached 60,942 horses by the end of 2024, with the number of registered owners increasing to 18,605, alongside a 7% increase in the registration of foals and a 24% decrease in the number of imported horses during 2024.
The cumulative number of registered Arabian horses does not represent the current number of live horses, as it includes pedigree records since the beginning of registration and does not mean that all registered horses are still present in the Kingdom, while the figure of 60,000 is the latest estimate of the actual live horses in Saudi Arabia.
