A tanker truck loaded with liquefied petroleum gas exploded on a main road in Tamaulipas, northeastern Mexico, causing a massive fire and closing the road for hours, while authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The incident occurred on the Zaragoza-Gonzalez road, near kilometers 49-50 and in the vicinity of the “Escandon” security station, after the fire broke out in the tanker before it exploded, prompting the deployment of firefighting and civil protection teams and the establishment of a security cordon around the area.

Damage to a Gas Station and Stores

The civil protection coordinator in Tamaulipas, Luis Gerardo Gonzalez, stated that the explosion caused damage to a gas station, a nearby store, and a restaurant, in addition to a security facility belonging to the state police.

He confirmed that no injuries were reported due to the explosion, while a pregnant woman was taken to a hospital in the city of El Mante after suffering a nervous crisis, and authorities reported that her condition is stable.

Cooling a Second Tank to Prevent Explosion

After controlling the immediate danger, firefighting teams worked to cool a second tank in the truck, fearing it might explode, while authorities kept the road closed during emergency operations and securing the site.

Videos circulated from the incident site showed a massive ball of flames and a thick column of smoke rising, while vehicles stopped at a distance from the explosion site.

Investigation into the Cause of the Fire

According to local authorities, the final cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Local reports quoted the truck driver as saying that the fire may have started due to overheating of the brakes or an electrical short circuit, but civil protection confirmed that the cause is still under investigation.

The incident disrupted traffic on the road linking Victoria and Tampico in the Gonzalez-Zaragoza sector, before emergency teams continued their work to secure the area and clear the aftermath of the incident.
