The World Health Organization has called for a reduction in long hospital stays in psychiatric facilities and for a faster transition to community-based care services, allowing patients to receive support and treatment while maintaining their freedom, dignity, and integration into society.

The organization has issued a new practical guide to assist countries and psychiatric hospital managers in transitioning from long-term institutional care models to community-based services centered around the individual.

Stays Lasting Months and Years

The organization clarified that many individuals with mental disorders still live in large hospitals and institutions for extended periods, with about half of those residing there being held involuntarily for months or years, and some cases extending to decades.

The guide specifically targets individuals who have spent six months or more in psychiatric hospitals by supporting their return to their communities and providing housing, healthcare, social support, and opportunities for education and employment.

28% Stay More Than 6 Months

According to data from the organization’s “Mental Health Atlas,” 28% of individuals entering psychiatric hospitals stay for more than six months, while only 9% of fully reporting countries have transitioned to a community mental health care model, with 53% still in the early stages of this transition.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasized that access to ongoing mental health support should not mean sacrificing freedom, dignity, or an individual’s place within their community, calling for more investments to be directed towards rights-based and community mental health care.

This call comes on the eve of World Mental Health Day, which is observed on October 10 each year.
