The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel Aty, announced that Egypt is ready to respond to any request from Saudi Arabia for support, including military support.

He emphasized in an interview with Bloomberg today (Tuesday) that his country stands by the Kingdom in facing attacks targeting its territory.

All forms of support and solidarity with the Kingdom

Abdel Aty reiterated that “Saudi Arabia’s national security is an integral part of Egyptian and Arab national security,” stressing that Egypt offers all forms of support and solidarity with the Kingdom “without any reservations.”

In response to a question about the possibility of providing military support to the Kingdom, Abdel Aty said, “Whatever Saudi Arabia requests, we will certainly respond.” He affirmed that Egypt does not accept attacks on Saudi territory and stands firmly by the Kingdom, adding, “Egypt completely condemns these attacks.”

In response to a question about the possibility of direct Egyptian intervention in Yemen, the Foreign Minister stated that his country will continue to provide various forms of support and solidarity to Saudi Arabia.

The Mecca Agreement for Joint Defense

He clarified that Egypt is seriously considering the Mecca Agreement for Joint Defense, which includes Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, noting that Cairo is conducting consultations regarding the future of the regional security system in the Middle East.

He pointed out that the quadrilateral group, which includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, represents a platform for consultation on the security structure in the region, indicating that the group “will meet soon.”

He stated that Egypt has strong bilateral cooperation relations with the three countries in political, economic, and commercial fields, adding that communication with them is ongoing daily. He cited the joint statement issued two days ago in light of the attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.

The region faces multiple crises

The Egyptian Foreign Minister warned of the dangers of escalating tensions in the region, calling for an end to attacks and acts of aggression and for efforts to de-escalate. He said that the region faces multiple crises, including the Iran war, the situations in Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria, in addition to the Palestinian issue, which he described as “the core of the conflict in the region.”

Abdel Aty affirmed that political and diplomatic solutions represent “the only way” out of the current crises, stressing the need to work on calming tensions throughout the entire region.

The Egyptian economy is affected

On the economic front, Abdel Aty stated that disruptions in supply chains, due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, and the Red Sea, have caused significant damage to the Egyptian economy and negatively impacted Suez Canal revenues.

He added that losses in canal revenues exceeded $20 billion, according to what Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had previously announced, noting that these are “net losses.”

He warned that supply chain disruptions are also putting pressure on energy and food prices, affecting energy and food security.

He pointed out that the Egyptian budget estimates for the current fiscal year were based on the assumption that the price of a barrel of oil would reach around $65, while he noted during the interview that the price has exceeded $105, increasing pressure on the economy.

He indicated that Egypt has been affected by the Ukrainian crisis, especially since it is the largest net importer of grains and wheat in the world.

Abdel Aty stated that the Egyptian economy achieved a growth rate of 5.3% during the first half of the current fiscal year, while the inflation rate decreased from 35% to about 14%, and the country managed to create more than 1.5 million job opportunities.
