The British government announced today (Wednesday) the acceleration of the delivery of thousands of defensive missiles to Ukraine, as part of a military support package worth £1.6 billion, coinciding with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to London for talks with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, focusing on enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and tightening economic sanctions on Russia.

The British government confirmed that this step aims to strengthen Kyiv’s ability to counter Russian air attacks, especially the jet-powered drones that have become an increasing challenge for Ukrainian air defense systems, as cities and energy facilities continue to be targeted ahead of the winter season.

More than 5,000 missiles over four years

The British government clarified that it will expedite the delivery of the lightweight multi-role “LMM” missiles, which have proven effective in intercepting Russian drones equipped with jet engines, capable of flying at higher speeds and altitudes than conventional drones. This step is part of a previous British commitment worth £1.6 billion to supply Ukraine with more than five thousand missiles over four years. London also announced the provision of surface-to-air missiles worth £45 million, with plans to expedite the delivery of a £10 million batch to meet urgent Ukrainian defense needs during the winter. This means that the £1.6 billion amount represents the value of a four-year arms program, rather than a new package fully announced on the occasion of Zelensky’s visit.

Additional packages of sanctions and military aid

Prime Minister Andy Burnham directed ministers to prepare proposals for additional packages of sanctions, military aid, and financial support for Ukraine in the coming weeks. Burnham emphasized, ahead of his anticipated meeting with Zelensky, that continued British support for Ukraine is also linked to the protection of British and European security, stressing the need to provide Ukrainian forces with the equipment they require to confront Russian attacks. He stated that his country will continue to stand by Ukraine and will work to expedite the assistance provided to it and enhance the pressure aimed at ending the war.

British pressure to ban Russian gas export services

In parallel with military support, London announced its intention to continue pressuring its international partners to tighten restrictions on the Russian energy sector. British Finance Minister John Healey is set to call on other countries during the International Monetary Fund meetings in Bangkok to adopt similar restrictions to the British measures regarding maritime services used in exporting Russian liquefied natural gas. The measures aim to limit Russia’s ability to benefit from British shipping and insurance services in gas exports, thereby reducing the financial resources available to Moscow. The British government believes that increasing economic pressure, alongside strengthening Ukrainian defenses, may help push Russia to respond to international calls to halt attacks on energy infrastructure.

Zelensky’s visit amid ongoing Russian attacks

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s visit to London comes at a time when Russian attacks on the capital Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities continue, including targeting energy and electricity facilities. Ukraine is seeking to bolster its stockpile of air defense missiles ahead of winter, amid fears of new attacks on the electricity grid that could affect energy and heating supplies. Britain asserts that it will continue to work with its European allies to support Ukrainian military capabilities, alongside diplomatic and economic efforts aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow. The discussions between Zelensky and Burnham at the British Prime Minister’s Office are expected to address the developments of the war, Ukraine’s urgent military needs, and the possibilities of expanding sanctions and aid in the upcoming phase.
