The Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaydi ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the circumstances of what he described as a “violation” of the United States flag during a display held as part of the “Sovereignty Day” activities.

Spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah Al-Nauman, stated in a statement today (Sunday) that the Prime Minister directed the necessary legal actions to be taken against the violators, and to complete the investigation and submit its results as soon as possible. He confirmed that Al-Zaydi condemned the incident, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to laws and diplomatic norms.

The investigation follows events held to commemorate “Sovereignty Day,” which Iraq celebrated after the completion of the international coalition’s mission to combat ISIS and the withdrawal of its forces from the country on September 30th.

Al-Zaydi stated yesterday (Saturday) that the state has completed its sovereignty and that weapons are under the control of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He clarified that Iraq will transition with the unity of its people from facing crises to building the future, and that “the greatest thing we need is to maintain our unity in a homeland that accommodates everyone.”

He emphasized that his government will continue to combat corruption, protect public funds, and enhance preventive oversight, adding that the state has completed its sovereignty with the end of the international coalition’s military mission, and today it is a state that possesses its own decisions and protects its land and sky, with weapons under the control of the Commander-in-Chief.

Al-Zaydi had set June 30, 2027, as a deadline to finalize the issue of restricting the weapons of groups close to Iran in the hands of the Iraqi state, in an announcement made the day after the end of the international coalition’s mission led by Washington to combat armed groups. He said, “October 1, 2026, is considered a serious beginning to address the issue of weapons outside the control of the state, and to adhere to constitutional entitlements, according to a clear roadmap and agreed-upon timelines that do not exceed June 30, 2027, and in accordance with the constitutional principle that leaves the decision of war and peace to constitutional authorities, preventing any military action otherwise.”

He reiterated that the government will work, in accordance with the constitution, to disarm all non-Iraqi armed groups present on Iraqi territory completely, in a manner that preserves the security and stability of the country and controls its borders.
