With every purchase we make, we receive a paper receipt that we often throw away in the trash or casually stuff into our pockets and bags. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself: what does this simple piece of paper hide within its folds? Does an ordinary shopping trip turn into a hidden threat lurking for your health?
The dangerous secret lies in the fact that these receipts are not printed with traditional ink; they rely on a special type known as “thermal paper.” This paper is chemically programmed to react to the heat of printing devices, causing letters and numbers to appear thanks to compounds known as “bisphenols” (such as BPA and BPS).
Toxicologists strongly warn against these compounds, as they are classified as “endocrine disruptors,” which are harmful substances that directly interfere with the hormones responsible for regulating vital functions, growth, and metabolism in the human body.
But does merely touching the receipt pose a risk? Here, it can be said that the disaster lies in the fact that bisphenol compounds are easily absorbed by the skin. The situation worsens if your hands are oily, or if you applied moisturizer or hand sanitizer right after leaving the store and then touched the receipt immediately afterward, as absorption rates skyrocket.
While casual handling of a few receipts is a low-risk activity for the average person, workers in stores and restaurants who touch hundreds of receipts daily live in double danger, as their exposure levels to these compounds increase by hundreds of times compared to others.
How to Protect Yourself?
Although paper receipts are not the only source of bisphenols (as food and drinks packaged in plastic remain a greater risk), prevention is better than cure. Here are some protection methods:
- Beware of sanitizers: Avoid touching paper receipts immediately after using hand sanitizers or oily moisturizers.
- Digital alternative: Always request to have the receipt sent electronically via your email or phone messages whenever possible.
- Reduce and choose: Dispose of the receipt immediately and place it in your bag instead of holding onto it for too long, or use gloves if your work requires it.
