The Reserve Bank of India announced on Saturday that it is taking additional measures to support the rupee, after the currency fell to levels close to its all-time low against the US dollar.

The Reserve Bank of India confirmed that it will open a special window to meet the daily dollar needs of three state-owned oil marketing companies, aiming to ease the pressure on the spot foreign exchange market.

Under this arrangement, which is used during times of currency pressure, the central bank will provide dollars to the oil companies directly from its foreign exchange reserves.

The bank explained that “Indian Oil,” “Hindustan Petroleum,” and “Bharat Petroleum” will be able to access dollars through this mechanism starting from next Monday.

As part of the new measures, the central bank decided to prevent foreign exchange dealers from rebooking any foreign currency derivatives contracts. It also reduced the maximum position limit in currency derivatives traded on exchanges linked to the rupee to $5 million, compared to a previous limit of $100 million.

The bank also requested that foreign exchange dealers maintain a reserve for foreign exchange risk for all rupee-linked derivatives contracts, equivalent to 20% of the nominal value of each transaction.

Despite the central bank’s move to inject dollars and raise the key interest rate, pressures on the Indian currency continued.

The rupee closed on Friday at 96.73 rupees against the US dollar, with little change from the previous session’s close, remaining close to its all-time low of 96.96 rupees per dollar, which it recorded last May.
