International referee Nasser Al-Hamdan confirmed that the level of officiating during the first half of the match between the Saudi national team and their Qatari counterpart in the Gulf Cup semi-final was good to very good, pointing out that there were no significant refereeing errors that affected the course of the match.

Al-Hamdan explained that the nature of the encounter and the sportsmanship that prevailed among the players of both teams contributed to facilitating the task of the officiating crew, indicating that the match did not witness any violent interventions or intentional harm, which made most of the refereeing decisions appear clear and easy.

He said: “The first half was very good from a refereeing perspective, and there were no significant errors that warranted stopping to discuss them. Additionally, the spirit of sportsmanship was present among the players, and we did not see difficult situations or impactful interventions, which helped the referee manage the match better.”

In his assessment of the level of officiating in the tournament overall, Al-Hamdan pointed out that he was looking forward to a higher level, especially since the tournament has entered its decisive stages, confirming that some errors that appeared during the matches should have been avoided by the referees.

He added: “I was optimistic and hopeful to see a higher level of officiating in the tournament, but some easy mistakes appeared that the referees at this stage should have handled better. I also find it surprising that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) did not intervene in some situations that warranted review.”

Al-Hamdan emphasized the importance of having the role of video technology be more effective in matches, especially in cases that could affect the outcome of the match or the course of the competition, wishing that the upcoming matches would witness more accurate and clear refereeing decisions.

The international referee concluded his remarks by expressing his hope that the teams would qualify for the final match deservedly, free from any significant refereeing errors, wishing good luck to all referees in the remaining competitions of the tournament.
