The New York Times revealed that the U.S. military is preparing a range of options to resume large-scale combat operations against Iran, while President Donald Trump remains hesitant on this matter.

The newspaper quoted U.S. officials stating that the Department of Defense, the Pentagon, is planning to launch intensive strikes lasting three days, targeting Iran’s missile arsenal, drones, energy facilities, and military sites, which has not been officially announced by the Department of Defense. Three U.S. aircraft carriers are set to be stationed in the Middle East soon, in a large military buildup.

Target Bank and 5 Proposals

Officials reported that in recent months, the President’s National Security team and the Pentagon have presented five proposals for major operations targeting either Iran or the Houthis, but the President has rejected these plans each time. Trump stated in a social media post yesterday (Thursday) that the United States will not attack Iran before the midterm elections in November, noting that the two countries are “having productive discussions.” However, Trump has again ordered the preparation of options for military strikes. Senior national security officials, led by Vice President J.D. Vance, discussed these plans during a meeting held last Friday at Camp David. The plans revolve around a short and intensive campaign lasting about three days, according to individuals familiar with the proposal. The strikes focus on Iran’s arsenal of missiles and drones, a significant portion of which the Revolutionary Guard has rebuilt since the early stages of the war. Other targets include Iranian energy facilities, command centers, and Revolutionary Guard headquarters.

Progress in Diplomatic Talks

U.S. officials expressed their support for Trump’s assessment regarding progress in diplomatic talks that are ongoing through intermediaries. However, the talks still face obstacles related to the Iranian nuclear program. U.S. officials want to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear ambitions first, while the Iranians insist that these discussions be the final step. Officials suggested that the U.S. President may wait until after the Israeli elections scheduled for October 27 and the U.S. midterm elections the following week before making a decision on attacking Iran. Nevertheless, U.S. military leaders are preparing for the possibility of broader operations in the coming days, anticipating that the President may change his position again, according to the newspaper.

Three Aircraft Carriers for the First Time

Meanwhile, the U.S. aircraft carrier group “Theodore Roosevelt” left San Diego last week and is expected to join the aircraft carriers “George H.W. Bush” and “George Washington” around the end of October. Each carrier strike group includes other warships carrying attack helicopters and U.S. Marine Corps personnel. This will be the first time since 2003 that three U.S. aircraft carriers are present in the Middle East. The number of sailors and Marines deployed on the ships is expected to exceed 20,000, along with hundreds of aircraft. However, this large military buildup will be temporary, as the “George Washington” carrier is expected to return to its base in Japan shortly after the arrival of the “Roosevelt” next month to replace it. Despite the military reinforcement, it remains uncertain whether Trump will give the green light for any new attacks even after the elections.
