Based on the initiative presented by the State of Kuwait to designate a day for Gulf women, and within the framework of the work of the Permanent Committee for Women’s Affairs in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Family Affairs Council, proposed to adopt the fourth of March each year as a day for Gulf women, a proposal that received the consensus of the committee members.
On October 8, 2026, the Ministers of Social Affairs and Development of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, chaired by the Kingdom of Bahrain, approved the adoption of the fourth of March each year as a day for Gulf women, reflecting the shared interest in enhancing the presence of Gulf women and highlighting their contributions to family, society, and development.
The choice of the fourth of March is based on the significance of Article Four of the basic system of the Cooperation Council, and what it embodies of the Council’s goals in achieving coordination, integration, and connection among member states, reflecting the role of Gulf women as active partners in the journey of joint Gulf work. The date gains a media dimension as it falls at the beginning of March, a month that witnesses global attention to women’s issues, providing a Gulf space to celebrate women and highlight their contributions, just before International Women’s Day on March 8.
The adoption of Gulf Women’s Day represents an annual occasion to highlight the contributions of Gulf women and their presence in various fields, offering an experience that reflects the uniqueness of the Cooperation Council countries and their shared identity, while enhancing the presence of women in the paths of joint Gulf work, embodying the spirit of integration and cooperation among the Council’s states.
