There is an unwritten rule that is almost sacred in the world of commercial aviation, which states that danger must remain outside the cockpit. Therefore, we find the doors armored, access restricted, and all procedures designed so that no one outside the crew can easily reach the control keys. But what happens when the danger comes from the person already sitting inside the cockpit of the aircraft?
This terrifying question was forcefully raised by the incident involving Flydubai Flight FZ1073, when the co-pilot physically attacked the captain inside the cockpit using an “emergency axe,” causing the aircraft to lose thousands of feet in altitude amid a bloody struggle that nearly cost the lives of 174 passengers.
However, aside from the shock of this extraordinary incident, this event opens the door to a serious historical question: Has the history of aviation ever witnessed similar incidents where the danger came from within the cockpit crew itself?
- In 1982… when the “pilot” decided to crash the plane himself
On Japan Airlines Flight 350, the danger did not come from the co-pilot, but from the captain himself. During the approach to Tokyo, the captain went into a fit of madness, attempting to dive the aircraft toward the ground. Despite the desperate attempts of the co-pilot and the flight engineer to stop and restrain him, the aircraft crashed just before the runway in an incident that claimed the lives of 24 people. The difference here is that the “protector” turned into an “attacker,” but from the main pilot’s seat.
- In 2015… the co-pilot who locked the door forever
One of the most shocking disasters in modern times occurred on Germanwings Flight 9525. When the captain briefly left the cockpit, the co-pilot seized the opportunity to lock the cockpit door with the electronic latch, preventing the captain from re-entering. After that, he deliberately directed the aircraft toward the French Alps to carry out a suicide act that resulted in the deaths of everyone on board (150 people). There was no physical struggle, but the outcome was bloody and horrifying.
- In 1994… an employee sneaks into the cockpit
On FedEx Flight 705, the danger came from someone affiliated with the airline but not part of the flight crew, as an angry employee sneaked in and attempted to attack the pilots with a hammer and knives to take control of the aircraft. Although the cockpit crew sustained serious injuries, they fought a heroic battle and managed to subdue him and land safely.
When placing the Flydubai incident in its historical context, we find that it presents a different and extremely rare pattern: In Japan in 1982, the captain had collapsed and attacked his own aircraft. In Germanwings in 2015, the co-pilot locked the door and carried out a solo suicide operation. However, in Flydubai, there was a direct and sudden physical assault inside the cockpit by the co-pilot against his captain, using a sharp tool, while attempting to take control of the controls during flight.
Over the decades, airlines have spent billions of dollars to fortify cockpit doors against external attacks following the events of September 11. But the Flydubai incident has raised the most disturbing and terrifying question on the tables of global aviation safety agencies: How do you protect the cockpit when the person sitting deep within that impregnable fortress, holding the control keys, is the real source of danger?
