استقالة جديدة في الكونغرس.. نائبة ديمقراطية تتنحى قبل جلسة العقاب الأخلاقي – أخبار السعودية
أعلنت النائبة الديمقراطية عن ولاية فلوريدا، شيلا شيرفيلوس ماكورميك، استقالتها من مجلس النواب الأمريكي أمس (الثلاثاء)، قبل دقائق من اجتماع لجنة الأخلاقيات في المجلس لمناقشة توصية بعقوبة محتملة ضدها، قد تصل إلى الطرد من الكونغرس.
وقالت النائبة في بيان نشرته عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي: «لم تكن هذه عملية عادلة.. رفضت لجنة الأخلاقيات طلب محاميّ الجديد بمنحه وقتاً كافياً لإعداد دفاعي».
وأضافت: «من خلال المضي قدماً في هذه العملية وفي حين أن لائحة اتهام جنائية معلقة، منعتني اللجنة من الدفاع عن نفسي.. لن أقف مكتوفة الأيدي وأسمح بانتهاك حقوقي في الإجراءات القانونية الواجبة، وتشويه سمعتي الطيبة».
وتابعت شيرفيلوس ماكورميك: «بدلاً من ممارسة هذه الألاعيب السياسية، أختار التنحي حتى أتمكن من تكريس وقتي للدفاع عن جيراني في الدائرة العشرين بولاية فلوريدا، أقدم بموجب هذا استقالتي من الكونغرس الـ119، اعتباراً من الآن».
وأكدت في ختام بيانها: «يجب أن نكون حذرين للغاية بشأن السابقة التي نضعها.. في هذا البلد لا نعاقب الناس قبل اكتمال الإجراءات القانونية الواجبة.. لا نسمح للادعاءات وحدها بتجاوز إرادة الشعب.. هذا مسار خطير يجب أن يقلق كل أمريكي بغض النظر عن الحزب»، وأضافت: «لكن دعوني أقول هذا بوضوح: هذه المعركة لم تنتهِ بعد».
وتواجه النائبة شيرفيلوس ماكورميك (46 عاماً)، التي تمثل الدائرة الانتخابية العشرين في جنوب فلوريدا مناطق بروارد وبالم بيتش، اتهامات خطيرة تتعلق بإساءة استخدام أموال فيدرالية مخصصة لمواجهة جائحة كورونا.
وفي نوفمبر 2025، وجهت وزارة العدل الأمريكية لائحة اتهام فيدرالية ضدها وعائلتها، تتهمها بسرقة وغسل نحو 5 ملايين دولار من أموال الطوارئ الفيدرالية التي حصلت عليها شركة الرعاية الصحية العائلية عن طريق الخطأ كدفعة زائدة مقابل خدمات تطعيم ضد كوفيد-19.
ووفقاً للاتهامات، تم تحويل جزء كبير من هذه الأموال إلى تمويل حملتها الانتخابية الخاصة لعام 2022 (انتخابات خاصة فازت بها)، إضافة إلى إنفاق شخصي، من بينه شراء قرط ألماس أصفر زنته ثلاثة قراريط.
Democratic Representative from Florida, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, announced her resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday (Tuesday), just minutes before a meeting of the House Ethics Committee to discuss a recommendation for a potential penalty against her, which could lead to expulsion from Congress.
The representative stated in a message posted on social media: “This has not been a fair process.. The Ethics Committee denied my new attorney’s request for sufficient time to prepare my defense.”
She added: “By moving forward with this process and while a criminal indictment is pending, the committee has prevented me from defending myself.. I will not stand idly by and allow my rights to due process to be violated and my good reputation to be tarnished.”
Cherfilus-McCormick continued: “Instead of engaging in these political games, I choose to step down so that I can dedicate my time to defending my constituents in Florida’s 20th district, I hereby submit my resignation from the 119th Congress, effective immediately.”
She emphasized at the end of her statement: “We must be very careful about the precedent we set.. In this country, we do not punish people before due process is complete.. We do not allow mere allegations to override the will of the people.. This is a dangerous path that should concern every American regardless of party,” and added: “But let me be clear: this battle is not over.”
Representative Cherfilus-McCormick (46 years old), who represents the 20th congressional district in South Florida covering Broward and Palm Beach counties, faces serious allegations related to the misuse of federal funds intended to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
In November 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a federal indictment against her and her family, accusing her of stealing and laundering approximately $5 million in federal emergency funds that her family healthcare company mistakenly received as an overpayment for COVID-19 vaccination services.
According to the allegations, a significant portion of these funds was diverted to finance her personal campaign for the 2022 election (a special election she won), in addition to personal expenditures, including the purchase of a three-carat yellow diamond earring.
