The issue of the seized explosives shipment in Dhahr al-Baydar has imposed itself on the political and security scene, amid the questions it has raised regarding its background, destination, and the party behind it.

From the Beqaa to Greater Beirut

In the first official stance, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized that the state will not relent in uncovering the circumstances surrounding it and holding all those involved accountable, asserting that the investigation must lead to the complete truth, away from any leniency or neglect. Salam clarified in a post on X today (Monday) that the truck, which was stopped a few days ago, was heading from the Beqaa to the Greater Beirut area, carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosive materials, including the highly explosive substance “C4.”

While expressing his understanding of the concerns of the Lebanese people, he noted that this substance has been used in several political assassination operations in modern Lebanese history, affirming that the government will continue the investigations to uncover the identities of those involved and those behind them, determine their plans and objectives, and refer them to the judiciary. He stressed the need to deal firmly with any weapon outside the framework of legitimacy, whether in possession, transport, or use.

Hezbollah’s Involvement and the Arrested Individuals’ Confessions

The details of the case date back to last Thursday evening, when members of the Dhahr al-Baydar checkpoint of the Internal Security Forces became suspicious of a “Dodge” van. After searching it, they arrested two individuals who were on board and seized about 250 kilograms of “TNT” and 250 kilograms of “C4,” in addition to small iron balls and nails.

The quantity seized raised questions about the purpose of transporting it to Beirut, especially since initial investigations, according to security and judicial information, indicated that the arrested individuals stated they were tasked with transporting the shipment from Baalbek to the southern suburb, following a mechanism known as “dead mail,” which involves delivering materials to a specific point without direct communication between the transporter and the receiving party.

According to the same information, the arrested individuals admitted their affiliation with Hezbollah and stated that the explosives belonged to the party, and that a person known as “Sajid,” who is said to be responsible in the Beqaa area, handed them the shipment to transport it to the southern suburb, where it was supposed to be delivered to a person known as “Zulfiqar.” Investigations are still ongoing to determine the true identities of the two individuals, verify their roles, and uncover whether there were other parties involved in preparing or transporting the shipment, as well as identifying its ultimate purpose.

Renewed Discussion on Hezbollah’s Weapons

The case has reopened the political discussion regarding Hezbollah’s weapons and its security activities outside the framework of the state, in light of the government’s decisions issued on March 2. Calls have increased for the issue to be taken seriously, for investigations to be completed without delay, and for all those responsible for the shipment to be revealed, from those who transported it to those who planned it and issued orders regarding it, if investigations prove such roles exist.

Concerns have heightened, with leaks and European information discussing operations being prepared by Hezbollah, at the behest of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, to target senior Lebanese officials. However, despite the seriousness of this information, it remains within the realm of what has been raised in the media and security circles, and cannot be considered established facts without evidence and investigative results confirming it. Nonetheless, its coincidence with the seizure of the shipment has added further anxiety to the political climate.
